South Haven

South Haven is midway up the coast of Lake Michigan in Southwest Michigan. This is a vibrant little beach town, with a strong arts and culture scene, excellent restaurants, and boutique shops. It also happens to be situated on one of the loveliest stretches of the Lake Michigan shore, with soft sandy beaches and sunsets that take the breath away. South Haven bed and breakfasts are enviable destinations.

Although it can be hard to tear oneself away from the beach, the streets of South Haven are equally compelling. It is easy to spend hours browsing the numerous art galleries and studios. Pick up a piece of original art by a South Haven artist, so memories of time spent in a bed and breakfast will never fade.

Evenings are happily spent walking the beach and watching the setting sun (camera in hand). If in the mood for something a little more exciting, try a show at Foundry Hall. This former piston factory is now a wonderful music hall and theatre. Or take in a show by Our Town Players, South Haven’s Community Theatre, which puts on shows throughout the year. The South Haven Center for the Arts brings in programs throughout the year and is responsible for the South Haven Summer Art Fair. Movie buffs will enjoy first-run films at the Michigan Theatre in town.

The harbor is graced by the strong and silent South Haven Michigan Lighthouse, which has been guiding shipping traffic safely past these shores for over a century. Its conical, cast iron frame is accessed by a beautiful iron catwalk perched high above the water. Visitors should have cameras out and ready when the sun sets behind South Haven Light.

If there is a mariner lurking within you, be sure to get out on Lake Michigan while staying at a bed and breakfast. Rent a boat, take a chartered fishing expedition, or enjoy a scenic cruise on a sailboat.

With so many options, it may be necessary to return to bed and breakfasts again and again.
