Day 2: Nature and Adventure

Morning- Drive along this picturesque River Road Scenic Byway, taking in the scenic beauty of the area. The route spans 22 miles along the Au Sable River. A few insider tips and notables:

Location and Starting Point- The byway begins at the junction with U.S. 23 in Iosco County. It extends between Lake Huron and the Huron-Manistee National Forest. 

Scenic Beauty- The drive along the River Road Scenic Byway is nothing short of spectacular and the route follows the riverfront and parallels the AuSable River.  You’ll be capsulated in towering trees, forested foliage, and glimpses of the river. It’s interesting to note that this river played a significant role in Michigan’s logging industry. 

Wildlife and Bald Eagles:- The forest surrounding the byway is home to a variety of wildlife, including the magnificent bald eagle.

Recreational Stops- Along the way, you’ll encounter several recreational stops:

  • Lumberman’s Monument: Learn about the history of logging and enjoy scenic views.
  • Foote Dam Pond: Explore this area and take in the natural beauty.
  • Largo Springs Interpretive Site: Get up-close with peaceful natural springs.

Afternoon-  Tuttle Marsh Wildlife Area: Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will love this spot. Look out for ospreys, eagles, and other wildlife.

Evening- Enjoy a bountiful dinner at Northwood Steakhouse. Great wine list, prime rib, and whitefish dinners.

Day 3: History and Culture

Morning- Lumberman’s Monument: Visit this cool monument and learn about the area’s logging history. The views from the top are beautiful.

Late Morning- The AuSable/Oscoda Historical Society & Museum Dive into local history and explore exhibits that showcase Oscoda’s past.

Afternoon- Hunt’s Canoes & Miniature Golf: Have a fantastic day out with canoeing, miniature golf, and stops at small beaches along the river.

Evening – Come back to your lakeside room and enjoy your hot tub and maybe a preordered bottle of champagne with chocolate-covered strawberries. Afterward, order pizza from G’s Pizzeria and Deli
