She Would Walk a Thousand Miles of Beach for a Night at a Michigan Bed and Breakfast Inn

When Loreen Nuienhius walked 302 miles from Port Clinton, OH and along Lake Huron to Bay City, MI, it was just the first leg of a planned 1000 mile walk along several stretches of all five Great Lakes. During that 23 day leg, which ended just a few days ago, Loreen rested up at welcoming Michigan Lake to Lake B&B Association-member inns along the way.

For the innkeepers, it was a first — the first time a guest ever arrived on foot. That’s how Sandy White and Nicholas Grazia of Adventure Inn B&B, right on the lakeshore in North Lakeport, made Loreen’s acquaintance.

Loreen Niewenhuis“Her stay prompted me to say again that B&B guests are simply the nicest, most interesting folks you can meet,” Sandy said.

Janice Duerr, innkeeper at The State Street Inn in Harbor Beach, hosted Loreen for two nights then kept her company the six miles north to Port Hope. A few days later, Innkeepers Gail and Frank Partee welcomed her to Historic Webster House in Bay City, the last leg of the first leg of her hike. Loreen (pictured right) is taking a month off to attend to family matters, and will resume her “walk on the beach” in June. You can follow her adventures on her blog.

Lest you think she’s just kidding, this is Loreen’s second 1000-mile walk. The first was around Lake Michigan in 2009.  You can order her book, A 1000 Mile Walk on the Beach, by ordering here from Brilliant Books. It’s also available at independent bookstores everywhere. Her next book will chronicle her adventures this time around.
