They’re popping the question at B&Bs

Unless you’re in some kind of rush, popping the question has always been an occasion to get creative.  But in today’s world of instant sharing, the moment calls for advance planning, a photographer hiding in the bushes, and a beautiful backdrop.

In popping the question aboard a sailboat on Grand Traverse Bay, Kris had checked all the boxes.

  • Advance planning. Check.
  • Beautiful backdrop. Check.
  • Photographer. Check, except for the bushes. Instead, the sailboat’s captain looked up momentarily from the helm. Click. Check.

Amelie Ann said yes, of course.

If getting engaged on a boat is your dream location, Michigan is surrounded by water and has many inland lakes. If you plan ahead, you’re likely to find the innkeeper at the bed and breakfast where you plan to stay as a willing accomplice, connecting you to the perfect resources. Hotels don’t do that.

Newly engaged couple at Torch Lake B&B.
Yu Liu proposed to Se Se during the sunset cruise offered by Torch Lake B&B.
He call ahead to set it all up, including a dozen long-stem red roses and a romance package waiting in the room. Innkeeper Deb Cannon captured the moments.

Popping the question in a very public way — at, let’s say, a Tigers game — has been overdone. Where’s the romance in sharing a personal moment with thousands or showing up on a kiss cam with stringy hair?

Instead, to find a more private setting, a romantic retreat, consider a Michigan B&B offering indoor as well as outdoor beauty.

Call the innkeepers to make advance, customized arrangements. They will love to conspire with you to make it a special occasion. Food, photographer, flowers — just ask. Most will create a package just for you.

Torch Lake Bed and Breakfast overlooks the azure waters of one of Michigan’s most beautiful inland lakes. For popping the question, choose a spot on the extensive balcony, or on the dock, in a boat, or just stand in the water. (But don’t drop the ring.)

Engagements happen all the time on the sandy Lake Huron beach at Huron House Bed and Breakfast in Oscoda, whose 14 rooms offer a fireplace plus either an indoor whirlpool tub or outdoor private hot tub, or both.

Neither beach nor water is required for a successful engagement, however, and you needn’t travel far from home for an intimate engagement.

If you’re popping the question in winter, find a B&B with a grand or cozy fireplace, always a great backdrop. You’ll find them all over the state. Too numerous to mention. Ask the innkeeper to message you a photo so you can imagine the moment. Around the holidays, many B&Bs are  beautifully decorated, especially the fireplace.

When you ask someone to spend all his or her days with you, make it special and memorable. Please do check out the options at a #MichBnB.
