They’re popping the question at B&Bs

Unless you’re in some kind of rush, popping the question has always been an occasion to get creative.  But in today’s world of instant sharing, the moment calls for advance planning, a photographer hiding in the bushes, and a beautiful backdrop.

In popping the question aboard Sailing Yacht Scout on East Grand Traverse Bay, Kris had checked all the boxes.

  • Advance planning. Check.
  • Beautiful backdrop. Check. (And that’s Tall Ship Manitou in the background, where popping the question or dreaming about it are frequent occurrences. Small weddings, too.)
  • Photographer. Check, except for the bushes. Instead, Captain Amber Ramsey looked up momentarily from the helm. Click. Check.

And the couple have not only a beautiful Instagram capture but also a lasting memory that no selfie could do justice to.

Amelie Ann said yes, of course.

Overnight accommodations and a full breakfast are available at both of these floating Traverse City bed and breakfasts.

Newly engaged couple at Torch Lake B&B.
Yu Liu proposed to Se Se during the sunset cruise offered by Torch Lake B&B.
He call ahead to set it all up, including a dozen long-stem red roses and a romance package waiting in the room. Innkeeper Deb Cannon captured the moments.

Popping the question in a very public way — at, let’s say, a Tigers game — has been overdone. Where’s the romance in sharing a personal moment with thousands or showing up on a kiss cam with stringy hair?

Instead, to find a more private setting, a romantic retreat, consider a Michigan B&B offering indoor as well as outdoor beauty.

Call the innkeepers to make advance, customized arrangements. They will love to conspire with you to make it a special occasion. Food, photographer, flowers — just ask. Most will create a package just for you.

Torch Lake Bed and Breakfast overlooks the azure waters of one of Michigan’s most beautiful inland lakes. For popping the question, choose a spot on the extensive balcony, or on the dock, in a boat, or just stand in the water. (But don’t drop the ring.)

When popping the question at Sherwood Forest B&B, many guests choose this private nook of the porch.
This is the nook on the porch at Sherwood Forest B&B that the innkeepers call “the proposal spot.” It’s out of the way, overlooking the woods. The innkeepers will arrange flower petals, candles, wine. Ask them to customize the moment for you.

Engagements happen all the time on the sandy Lake Huron beach at Huron House Bed and Breakfast in Oscoda, whose 14 rooms offer a fireplace plus either an indoor whirlpool tub or outdoor private hot tub, or both.

Neither beach nor water is required for a successful engagement, however, and you needn’t travel far from home for an intimate engagement.

In the Saugatuck-Douglas area, Sherwood Forest B&B offers a private nook on the front porch or, a few blocks away at Douglas House B&B, choose from one of several gorgeous gardens.

At Munro House B&B and Spa in Jonesville, either the parlor or the music room provides a classic setting. Both are lovely. Make a weekend of it with one of the innkeepers’ great packages.

If you’re popping the question in winter, find a B&B with a grand or cozy fireplace, always a great backdrop. You’ll find them all over the state. Too numerous to mention. Ask the innkeeper to message you a photo so you can imagine the moment. Around the holidays, many B&Bs are  beautifully decorated, especially the fireplace.

When you ask someone to spend all his or her days with you, make it special and memorable. Please do check out the options at a #MichBnB.
