In a state filled with grand old homes that are now bed and breakfasts and exude historic charm, three MBBA inns were recognized as being among “9 Historic Bed and Breakfasts in Michigan That Will Absolutely Charm You.” (Source: Only In Your State.)
The following #MichBnB inns made the list — including Kingsley House B&B — shown in the photo above. In alphabetical order:
Big Bay Point Lighthouse
Nick Korstad, an experienced lighthouse preservationist, keeps the light on, not only for guests but also for mariners on Lake Superior. Big Bay Point Lighthouse is a working lighthouse. Seven guest rooms, each with private bath, occupy the first and second floors. All have wonderful views. When you climb to the lighthouse lantern, you’ll be 120 feet above the level of Lake Superior.
One online reviewer summed up his experience this way: “Fresh paint, beautiful flower gardens, comfortable cozy rooms. The hot breakfast in the morning including a large bowl of fresh fruit, homemade apple bread, was more than I expected. Lovely sitting rooms with books, games and great views of Lake Superior and huge waves from the wind storm followed by a full moon and clear skies in the morning.”
Prior to purchasing Big Bay Point Lighthouse, Nick got quite a bit of favorable press for restoring Borden Flats Lighthouse in Massachusetts. He is also the current keeper of the unique and historic Spectacle Reef Lighthouse in Lake Huron.
Grand Victorian Bed and Breakfast Inn
One of the most-often photographed B&Bs in the state, The Grand Victorian Bed and Breakfast Inn has appeared on cereal and cracker boxes because it’s so beautiful in every season and also is considered a perfect example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture.
Have you ever slipped into a bed with sheets that were ironed by hand? Here, you will. Choose from six rooms, two with king beds, two with fireplaces, two with Jacuzzis. When you tear yourselves away from your romantic room or one of the porches or the parlor, you’ll fall in love with the northwest Michigan town of Bellaire.
Innkeepers Yuning Wang and Jason Wu close the inn for a few weeks between January and March. If you miss taking a fall getaway, book early for 2018.
Kingsley House Bed and Breakfast Inn
If the turret the photo atop this post appeals to the romantic in you, you can book a room that includes the turret. On the second floor of Kingsley House Bed and Breakfast Inn, those windows envelope the queen bed in the Duchess Chambers. A spacious third-floor suite gets the peaked turret as an adjoining and very private sitting room.
But all eight rooms are loaded with historic charm and all bear the names of apples in tribute to the university researcher who identified this area of Michigan as having an ideal climate for orchards. He’s the one who built this magnificent home with its wraparound porch.
Fennville is a friendly, less-crowded small town offering an ideal location for exploring Southwest Michigan, including Kalamazoo, 45 minutes to the southeast, Grand Rapids, 45 minutes to the northeast, and Lake Michigan beach towns such as South Haven and Saugatuck.
