Kalamazoo

Southwest Michigan’s Kalamazoo boasts a vibrant Art Deco downtown area, several charming historic neighborhoods, and world-class museums. Each neighborhood in Kalamazoo has its own distinct personality: Stuart is a good area to admire Victorian and Queen Anne homes, while the Central Business District and surrounding area is a good place to shop. Kalamazoo’s bed and breakfast innkeepers should be happy to share information about their hometown.

Stay in a bed and breakfast when in town for a show at the lovely historic Kalamazoo State Theatre, or to visit a student attending Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, or one of the other institutes of higher learning.

There is always something interesting happening in this college town: browse local art galleries when they stay open late for Art Hop, on the first Friday of every month; stay in a bed and breakfast during the one of the two yearly Kalamazoo Animation Festival International, when there is always some interesting form of entertainment for the community. Enjoy a performance at one of the many local theaters in town.

The excellent restaurants in Kalamazoo serve just about every type of food there is. Be sure to pair food with local wine or beer. Kalamazoo boasts several breweries and brewpubs, and there are two Michigan wineries in Kalamazoo. Exploring the many wineries on the nearby Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is a lovely excuse for a weekend getaway at a bed and breakfast.

Once outside of town, take some time to play in the great outdoors. Cycle, horseback ride, walk or ski part of the Kal-Haven Trail, which meanders more than 30 miles through woods, wetlands, prairies and small towns. Golf at one of the several excellent golf courses in and around Kalamazoo – the Milham Park Golf Course is considered to be one of the best in the country. Canoe or kayak a stretch of the Kalamazoo River, which runs through town, or head out to Morrow Lake for fishing or swimming. If at loss as to where to begin, ask bed and breakfast innkeepers for outdoor recreation recommendations.
