Bellaire is in Northwest Michigan, just east of Grand Traverse Bay and Torch Lake, in the Chain Lakes watershed. The area is paradise for outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
There is skiing here (downhill and cross country). There is golf here. Indeed, there are more than six golf courses in the area and much more within a short drive. Miles of trails await hikers and bikers; the Michigan Shore to Shore Trail, which connects Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, passes not far south of Bellaire. When snow covers the ground, strap on skis or snowshoes – just be sure to eat a hearty meal at a bed and breakfast before heading out for the day.
The Chain of Lakes watershed contains fourteen lakes connected by rivers. Explore these waters by kayak, canoe. or speedboat. Rise early to fish in peaceful solitude. Ask the local bed and breakfast innkeepers to reveal favorite swimming holes (perhaps in the warms waters of Lake Bellaire). When exploring the Chain of Lakes, be sure to visit Torch Lake. It’s been called one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and with good reason; the waters of Torch Lake are an amazing blue and turquoise.
Given all that water, it is no surprise that boating, fishing, and watersports reign supreme. Talk to innkeepers at any bed and breakfasts about charter fishing and about ship wreck cruises in Grand Traverse Bay, and sightseeing cruises. Find the best spots for boat rentals.
When tired from outdoor activities, try a different sport. Northwest Michigan has an excellent wine trail, and wine tasting is popular. The innkeepers at our bed and breakfasts can recommend good, local Michigan wines. If beer is preferred, there are several Michigan breweries near Bellaire.
