Allegan

Allegan is a charming town in Southwest Michigan that straddles the Kalamazoo River. It is 30 minutes northwest of Kalamazoo and about 45 minutes southwest of Grand Rapids. Allegan’s bed and breakfasts are in the heart of Southwest Michigan wine country, in an area rich in outdoor recreation. It is an ideal spot for romantic getaways, quiet retreats, or active vacations.

No matter the season, guests of bed and breakfasts in Allegan will find plenty to do. Visit the many wineries of SW Michigan throughout the year. Individual wineries offer wine tasting and special events year round, and the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Festival takes place close to Allegan each June. Ask your bed and breakfast innkeepers about their favorite local Michigan wineries.

Winter sports enthusiasts will enjoy both downhill and cross-country skiing near Allegan’s bed and breakfasts. Bittersweet Ski Area, Timber Ridge Ski Area, or Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboard Area offer downhill skiing and terrain parks. Cross-country skiing is available throughout the 50,000-acres of Allegan State Game Area, and on the half-dozen golf courses in and around Allegan.

Once the snow melts, cyclists will find southwest Michigan to be a great spot for road biking. There is mile after mile of gently rolling country roads, many of which have dedicated bike lanes. Hikers will enjoy walking through Allegan State Game Area, nearby Saugatuck Dunes State Park, or walking along the quiet riverfront boardwalk. Anglers will be thrilled by a number of great fishing holes: Lake Allegan, Pike Lake, Dumont Lake, and Swan Lake are just a few.

In town, enjoy a film at the restored art deco theatre, stock up on farm fresh food at the farmer’s market, and browse the shops along the riverfront. Or just relax at the bed and breakfast.
