At the Inn at the Rustic Gate, the innkeepers share the peace and tranquility they have found on a 146-acre former dairy farm surrounded by the Manistee National Forest.
The property overlooks a small private lake and a pond and offers vistas of woodlands, wetlands and meadows.
Group retreats that often include meditation, yoga, and mindfulness practice as well as individuals or couples seeking time away for self-directed reflection and solitude, are our most frequent visitors. We also host business meetings, artists groups, meetings of Ferris State University faculty and administrative departments.
The inn is centrally located in that Grand Rapids is a little over an hour’s drive south; Traverse City, about 90 minutes north. The city of Big Rapids is only eight miles east.
As you arrive, the fast pace of ordinary life begins to slow down when you pass through our gates.
The main house of the inn created from a large 1909 American Foursquare farmhouse, which offers the following spaces:
- Eight bedrooms each with its own bathroom.
- A dining room that can seat 18 people.
- A meditation loft with inspiring views.
- A living room/library with TV, music, and an eclectic collection of books including many that focus on spirituality, various religious traditions, and psychology.
In addition to the main house, we offer a separate meeting facility that holds approximately 20 people, an outdoor pavilion that accommodates about 50 people, a front porch that encourages time to sit and “rock out” in the summertime, a raised back deck that offers a panoramic view of nature, and the gem of our outdoor environment which is a walking meditation labyrinth with surrounding gardens and benches.
Unique experiences at the Inn at the Rustic Gate
Our inn is well suited for people looking for a gathering place for a small group retreat or an individual retreat. Our most frequent type of guests include those who want to hold or be a part of a spiritual retreat, yoga retreat, meditation retreat, or women’s gatherings. Our facility and the inspiring surroundings are ideal for artists, writers and quilters who wish to share creative time. Book clubs are welcome, either for a monthly meeting or a weekend getaway. We also invite business, academic and non-profit organizations to hold planning meetings at Inn at the Rustic Gate.
Swim, kayak, or go canoeing in nearby, spring-fed Hungerford Lake. The Hungerford Lake Recreation Area, which is approximately one mile from the inn, also offers 13 miles of loop trails for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding.
Several trails on our land allow you to take a scenic tour of our 146 acres and perhaps glimpse wildlife. Birders will revel in the variety of species that can be seen on the property and in the adjacent Manistee National Forest. Sand hill cranes, Canadian geese, green heron and trumpeter swans nest on our property. Bald eagles who nest in the forest to the north fly across our land on their way to neighboring lakes and ponds. The sounds of the loons that nest on Hungerford Lake can be heard echoing through the trees. And on a clear evening stargazing here is spectacular due to the lack of light pollution.
Winter weather seems to magnify the serenity people find at The Inn at the Rustic Gate. Even though cocooning in wintertime can be a great comfort, we encourage people not to stay indoors all day. Although not groomed, our trails are ideal for winter woodland walks, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
