| Small town American charm. That’s what you’ll find here in the city of Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Mount Pleasant is all about its community, which visitors discover as soon as they arrive. Five acres donated by lumber mill owner David Ward was all it took for the voters of 1860 to form this town in Isabella County. Mount Pleasant eventually became a city in 1889. Central Michigan University is home to 27,000 students—quite a change from the one-room teacher’s college begun here in 1892. The focus of both the city and the university is education, agriculture, and community. Oil was discovered in Mount Pleasant in 1927. The city soon afterward became called the Oil Capital of Michigan. So, what is there to do in this fascinating destination city? Let’s start with the arts. There’s the Art Reach on Broadway Gift Shop and Gallery, where one can purchase local crafts. The University Art Gallery, the Hummingbird Art Gallery, and the Broadway Theater certainly are local treasures. Casinos, golfing, antiquing, bowling, canoeing, horse racing, the skate park…the list is just too long to imagine. So many opportunities with such small-town flavor! |
