| Located in Newaygo County, Michigan, Fremont rests on the Fremont Lake, and is included in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming metro area. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, and in the past was also called Elm Corners, Fremont Center, and Weaverville. That’s not all Fremont has been called—many also refer to it as the Baby Food Capital of the World, since it is the home of the Gerber Products Company. The town itself was born in 1855, when Daniel Weaver and his family settled here, and their home was used as the first public school and the first post office. Community was the key word even back then! Lumbering was the first industry, which was temporarily stunted during the fires of the Civil War. The Gerber family came on the scene in the 1870s, and began producing baby food in 1928. Now their food is transported from Fremont to over twenty foreign countries. There’s also a great ethnic flavor here in Fremont, as the Dutch immigrants settled here during the late 1800s. Visitors will truly enjoy this lovely town with its rich history, and outdoor action as well! Hunting, fishing, boating, camping, canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing…the list just grows and grows! |
