| Built on salt beds, this community along the St. Clair River was originally known as “Palmer”. You’ll find us only a short distance from Detroit, here in St. Clair County. On August 12, 1679, the day of the festival of Sainte-Claire, Robert Cavelier de la Salle and Pere Louis Hennepin sailed up the Detroit River. Father Hennepin held a mass and named the Lake Sainte-Claire. The river, as well as the county and the city that eventually came to be, were also given this name, which has also been spelled St. Clare, before today’s current spelling. Canadian immigrants often stopped off at St. Clair County. Some stayed and settled here, while others went to Flint, Lansing, Pontiac, or Detroit. The Goodells County Park contains the Historical Village, host to several buildings from the 1800s, and also contains the “Splashpad”, a new water park for some modern-day fun. There is a playground, open pavilions, and exploration of the life of a butterfly at the Butterfly Garden. The kids are sure to love this place. Have you thought about where you will find lodging when you travel to St. Clair on your Michigan vacation? We highly recommend the accommodations of a nearby Bed and Breakfast, which provide quiet and comfort during your stay. Before moving along, be sure to tour the Marine City Pride and Heritage Museum, the Wills Sainte Claire Automobile Museum, and the Flats Old Channel Range Lighthouse. Golf courses, lovely restaurants, charters, and much more await you here at St. Claire. |
