| Lumber, farming, and tourism. These have been the major industries here in Lakeside, Michigan, ever since the town began to grow and prosper in the 1850s. The Wilkinsons, a family very instrumental in the settling of this town once named for them, established the boarding house and trading post, as well as the 600-foot pier, boasting the “ Enterprise”. Supplies in from Chicago, and bricks and lumber out to the city, was the mission of the “ Enterprise”. As time passed, the town’s name was changed to Lakeside, and it became the vacation destination for the University of Chicago’s faculty and administrators. Legend has it, that Chicago politicians, as well as Al Capone, used the Lakeside Inn as a gambling and drinking haven during the years of Prohibition! There’s a lot of fun history that goes with this Berrien County town, but let’s look at today. Comfortable accommodations are welcoming the traveler at the Bed and Breakfast inns. Here in this Lake Michigan town, visitors are greeted by antique shops, lovely restaurants, the Vickers Film Theatre, and the Acorn Performing Arts Theater. For a walk in the sun, the beaches and trails are ready and waiting at the Warren Dunes State Park. Then, a tour of the Domaine Berrien Cellars or the Round Barn Winery is a perfect way to top off your refreshing vacation here at Lakeside. |
