Douglas

West Shore Golf Club, Bentley’s Fine Art and Antiques, Saugatuck Brewing Company (with microbrewery), Luoma Art Gallery, Button Art Gallery, Elizabeth Ellen Gallery, Joyce Petter Gallery, Profishient Charters LLC, Running Rivers, Inc. Kayak Rental. Did we miss anything? Of course we did, because this is just a sampling of all the great spots a visitor to Douglas, Michigan will find. Chicago and St. Louis were some of the home cities to the many folks who made their way to Douglas each year for the cool climate during the hot, steamy days of summer in the early 1900s. Prior to that, lumber was the central commodity in the town—which provided material for the rebuilding of Chicago after its 1871 fire. The location of Douglas, as well as its sister city of Saugatuck, along the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan, has made it a haven for ship captains—the SS Keewatin, now a museum, is located here so that residents and visitors alike can experience what sea life was like in the early 1900s. Another throw-back to earlier days is displayed in the charming “high tea”, which is served in town each Wednesday, as well as the Thursday evening socials held here. Farmland and orchards—peaches in particular—are abundant in this lush climate, which beckons you to pack your bags today and feel the cool breeze for yourself!
